Patna Stages Satirical Play ‘Bahaane’, Leaves Audience in Splits

Patna, March 29: A lively evening of theatre unfolded at Matri Pitri Chhaya Sadan, Dwarka Nagar (Road No. 2), Nayachak, Khemnichak, as the theatre group Binnaguri Rang Abhilasha presented the satirical play Bahaane, written by Ashok Pagal and directed by Bikesh Sah.

The play, rooted in sharp social commentary, revolves around the humorous yet thought-provoking dynamics between a cunning priest and his foolish disciple. The narrative begins with the priest stepping out for religious duties without bathing due to a water shortage, strictly instructing his disciple to keep it a secret. However, what follows is a cascade of comic blunders as the naive disciple attempts to obey the order, only to end up revealing more than intended.

Through a series of interactions with different characters, the play exposes layers of hypocrisy, blind obedience, and social pretensions. The audience was left in peals of laughter as the disciple’s antics unfolded on stage, while the underlying message of societal reform struck a deeper chord.

Aditya Sharma portrayed the role of the priest with convincing authority, while director Bikesh Sah impressed with his performance as Bhola, the gullible disciple. Chandan Kumar Gupta as Murli and Bhrigu Ranjan in a dual role added depth to the narrative. Prerna Priya’s portrayal of Madam Ji brought balance and nuance to the ensemble.

Behind the scenes, the production was supported by Ritik Kumar (lighting), Jigar Kumar (music), and Pooja Kumari (make-up). The conceptualisation was led by Bikesh Sah, with stage materials managed by Chandan Kumar Gupta and costumes designed by Aditya Sharma. Additional support came from Rahul Jha, Nitesh Sah, and Ramkrishna Mandal.

Blending humour with a strong social message, Bahaane stood out as a compelling theatrical effort, reaffirming the power of stagecraft in addressing everyday realities with wit and insight.
