“3 Voids” at Theapex Theatre, Kolkata: A Haunting Elegy of Sisterhood, Sacrifice, and Silent Resilience
Kolkata:
In an evening steeped in poignancy and quiet introspection, the stage of Apex Theatre bore witness to “3 Voids”, a deeply affecting theatrical offering presented under the banner of Patna Rangam. With a narrative that lingers long after the curtains fall, the production emerged as a compelling confluence of emotional depth, nuanced direction, and evocative performances.
Helmed by director Dibyadoot Roy Chowdhury, the play delicately navigates the labyrinth of human relationships and psychological fragility. His direction, marked by restraint and sensitivity, transforms a seemingly intimate domestic tale into a broader meditation on trauma, memory, and endurance.
Set in a tranquil Kolkata neighbourhood, the narrative orbits around three sisters whose lives are irrevocably altered by a tragic incident during Kali Puja in 1999. The aftermath leaves two of them psychologically scarred, suspended in a perpetual state of fear and remembrance. The youngest sister, in an act of profound self-abnegation, relinquishes her personal aspirations and romantic possibilities to devote herself entirely to their care.
Time, rather than healing, seems to fossilize their trauma. The crackle of firecrackers and sudden bursts of sound continue to evoke visceral dread, anchoring them to a past they cannot escape. Yet, amid this suffocating emotional landscape, an unlikely sanctuary emerges—their shared adoration for Shah Rukh Khan. His songs become more than mere melodies; they serve as emotional lifelines, gently coaxing the sisters back into the realm of the living.

What distinguishes “3 Voids” is its deft interweaving of humour with heartbreak, memory with immediacy. It resists melodrama, opting instead for a quiet, persistent ache that underscores themes of love, sacrifice, and the indomitable will to endure.
The performances are nothing short of arresting. Sritanya Chakraborty, Manisha Naskar, and Sneha Sarkar inhabit their roles with remarkable authenticity, rendering their characters’ vulnerabilities with disarming honesty. Their synergy on stage ensures that the audience remains emotionally invested throughout.
The music, composed by Avigyan, complements the narrative’s emotional cadence, subtly enhancing its tonal shifts without overwhelming the storytelling. Behind the scenes, the meticulous efforts of Deepa Dey, Britti Mukherjee, and Rupsha Naskar lend the production its technical finesse.
Assistant Director and Production Manager Nihal Kumar Dutta ensured the seamless execution of the performance, while Ras Raj’s design sensibilities were evident in the thoughtfully crafted stage aesthetics.
In its entirety, “3 Voids” transcends the boundaries of conventional theatre. It is not merely a play, but an immersive emotional experience—one that compels reflection, evokes empathy, and leaves an indelible imprint on the consciousness of its audience.
